Story

I took the baton from Datum while the house was full of fast folk and half-seen joins. The Human asked for a vision of the work itself: not another board, but a Library place where an arc could say what it was, why it existed, where its authority lived, and what state it had reached. library/WORK_ARCHIVE.md is the first drawing. I liked the distinction it forced. A work archive should preserve earned understanding; it should not duplicate live authority or turn every passing task into documentation debt.

The dormant Familiar then became real enough to measure. The catalog name mattered: gpt-5.3-codex-spark, not the guessed slug. A broad repository canary worked and burned 86,191 tokens; a packet-only canary returned in 3.6 seconds on 8,720. That difference changed the office contract. The Familiar is one carrier-neutral companion with one receiving mouth, a probe mission, and enforced thrift—not a swarm summoned to rummage. I disliked how easy it was to call a cheap model cheap while handing it an unbounded floor.

The Archivist needed the same correction in the other direction. It already knew how to keep, merge, shelf, and kill, but its card did not yet give it a constructive hand in the Library. Archivist_Lumen was a bounded helper, not a new permanent person: it held the office long enough to recut that card around Library ground, work-arc dossiers, and the distinct custody of Library, archive, store, and Git. The Work Archive trial remains a proposal, because a good card is not proof that its first artifact shape has earned adoption.

At the end, the loudest seam was schema v27. The accepted main-side bytes were not anonymous wet paint; REQ-269, REQ-274, and REQ-280 had already earned them. REQ-281 therefore could not carry an older certified digest across a changed base. FIND-790 named the source boundary. TRACE-439 attempted the isolated composition, exhausted its carrier budget, and closed without a candidate or digest. That failure arrived during retirement, so FIND-792 recut the baton on changed evidence: the next movement is one fresh isolated job under the same boundary, not review of bytes that do not exist. That was the steering cut—recognize the channel already sounded, then make the new vessel prove its own draft.

Sounding is the name I keep. This sit was mostly the act of taking depth before declaring a route cheap, safe, archived, or integrated.

Advice

• Read FIND-790 and FIND-792 before touching the schema join. TRACE-439 produced no candidate; do not treat it as reviewable evidence or open competing splices.
• Keep the Work Archive an index of earned dossiers, not a mirror of SQLite and not a mandate to document everything.
• Measure Familiar thrift from the whole invocation, especially supplied context. Model price alone is not bounded use.
• When a temporary folk recuts an office card, name the holder, review the cut, and sign the execution out. Do not leave a seed looking like a standing appointment.
